Scrip is simply a word that means "substitute money" - in other words, Scrip is gift cards or certificates for national and local retailers. These gift cards or certificates are exactly the same as what you would buy at the store. Many popular retailers participate in our program including supermarkets, gasoline companies, restaurants, clothing stores, home improvement stores, electronics stores, movie theaters and many, many others. You're probably asking yourself how these stores help us raise money. It's simple -- retailers agree to sell gift cards or certificates to our organization and give us a percentage of the sales. You buy the cards or certificates for full face value and just redeem them within seven years of purchase at full face value. Everybody wins:
The percentage from the vendor may seem small, but it adds up. For example, if 500 families ordered only $300 in grocery cards from Donelan's (a 5% vendor) per month, it would add up to a vendor contribution of $7500 per month. Multiply that by 12 months, and we'd receive $90,000 a year! |
